Classical music fans in MN (and violin fans everywhere) will
know the name Chad Hoopes - he served as the MPR Artist in Residence a few
years ago.

Well, this afternoon I grabbed a copy of this week's
Pariscope magazine, and imagine my delight when I discovered that he's playing
a recital (with accompanist David Fung) at Salle de l'Auditorium du Louvre tonight!
I’m so glad that my plans for the evening were tentative....
What a fabulous recital – incredible tone, artistry and
technique throughout this varied program. And he's just 21! He started with a
Dvořák Sonata, then Prokofiev
“Five Melodies for Violin and Piano” (fascinating stuff, and he played it from
memory), then after intermission two pieces by Mozart (also from memory) and a
Franck Sonata. He really “owned” all of these pieces, especially the Prokofiev
and Mozart. His two encores, Kreisler’s "Syncopation" and
Rachmaninoff’s "Vocalise,"brought down the house.
I’d estimate 400+ in the audience, a nice mix of youngsters,
middlesters and oldsters. The woman
sitting next to me was from Fort Worth TX – I really enjoyed bragging to her
about our MN cultural scene and Chad Hoopes’ Minnesota connection!
The museum was closed by the time the concert and encores
ended, so we were led out, almost single-file, with guards watching our every
move. I guess that they DO have a few valuable things in that museum!

Departing the Louvre - note that they now have a museum shop (on the right here) outside on the courtyard! |
