The "Pay Attention, Silly" Lesson - Friday, 24 May

First, some preliminaries.  The AirFrance flight to which I was shifted yesterday was jam-packed.  Lots of travelin’ going on!

I was surprised that most of the flight attendants were men.  The one who had to unlock and restart my stuck-on-Japanese seat monitor multiple times (!) was quite witty as well!  The situation wasn't stressing me out or anything, but he certainly had some good defuse-the-situation skills.

Speaking of entertainment systems, check out the two classical music playlists!  I haven’t seen such extensive ones for years!  (You can click on any photo in this blog to see a larger version.)

So, then, here is this trip's first lesson in paying attention to everything!

I failed to notice that the MSP Delta gate agent failed to transfer my request for wheelchair assistance Paris-side to my AirFrance boarding pass.  When I agreed to take the later flight I reminded her, but she did have a few things going on and clearly the rebooking process didn't handle it automatically.

End result?  Total confusion among the flight crew when I arrived in Paris because my name wasn’t on their list.  Multiple checking of paper lists and i-Pads, multiple conversations with multiple colleagues, multiple phone calls, multiple “could I see your boarding pass again” requests, multiple attempted explanations from me.  Sheesh!  Sorry for causing chaos!

Finally, a ride on wheelchair #1 to a waiting area where a new bunch of CDG employees tried to figure out the same thing.

Then wheelchair #2 to a new area where my “chair driver” thought I needed to transfer to another flight (despite the fact that my boarding pass clearly showed CDG as my final destination), then (after she took 10 minutes to check with her colleagues) down to the tarmac to take a rickety van through the underbelly of the airport, with stops at various locations to drop off or pick up other customers, then finally to the pre-passport-check arrival area to wait for more CDG employees to figure stuff out.

Then wheelchair #3 through passport check (that was speedy since I didn’t have to go through the long lines snaking through the stanchions/straps) and to baggage claim (by this time it was two hours since my flight had arrived, but happily my checked bag was still there) and down a long corridor to the reserved-taxi area.  Whew!  Made it!

I keep reminding myself that I was awarded $1,000 for shifting from my original flight!  Now I keep reminding myself to pay attention, like all the time!

Flying the Profitable Skies? - Thursday, 23 May

Such a deal!  Delta over-booked my flight, so they asked for volunteers to switch to an AirFrance flight that was leaving in three hours (also direct, Minneapolis to Paris) or to the same Delta flight tomorrow.  Heck, I can cool my jets (😁) for a couple hours for $1,000!

Ups & Downs…or Not! - Thursday, 23 May

I was on pins and needles a bit yesterday because I learned on Tuesday that the elevator isn't working in the building housing my Paris apartment.  EEK!  The company was called a couple times, and a technician had been assigned, but apparently no repair yet.  Actually the carriage itself seemed to work, you just couldn't open the exterior elevator door on the ground floor or 1st or 2nd floors, either from the outside or the inside.  Kevin, who's using the apartment this week, wrote to say that he could get in on the 3rd floor (our floor) and ride down to the ground level but then couldn't open the door.  He rode back up to 3rd and was able to get out.  Weird.

So last night I found a slightly tacky (décor-wise) hotel about a block from my apartment and contacted them re. a room, should I need it. They had only one room remaining and needed a credit card deposit by this morning to hold it.  Five minutes before I had to finalize the transaction, I got word from Luz, our apartment’s concierge, that the elevator was fixed – she even sent video of her entering the elevator on the ground floor, riding up to 3rd floor, and opening the door!  Phew and PTL!

This is a 14th century building (it's the one on the far right - my apartment is on the penultimate floor), and although the elevator isn't that old 🤣, I can imagine that it shifts a little from time to time with weather changes or whatever, which could cause the elevator mechanisms to go a bit goofy.  Still, a girl needs a lift!

Placeholder! - Thursday, 3 August

Don't worry, I'll eventually be back to complete my posts from my July-August 2023 trip, if for no other reason than I want to remember all the deets!

Duck, Duck (forget the Goose!) - Sunday, 30 July

My favorite brasserie fare is confit de canard:  duck leg/thigh marinated in salt, sugar and some liqueurs, and then slowly roasted in duck fat, then transferred to a deep container and completely submerged in the fat, and then refrigerated to age for a few weeks.  When it's time to eat, it's pulled from the fat, warmed and crisped under a broiler, and served with fried or sautéed potatoes and a salad.  Hooo boy, it doesn't get much better than this!

Somehow I hadn't had it this trip before today.  The quality does vary a bit, but this was very tasty, and just about three blocks from home at Brasserie Les Philosophes!

Les Philosophes - tasty food and a buzzing street scene at 28, rue Vieille du Temple, in the 4th arrondissement.

Ah, the Restorative Powers... - Wednesday, 26 July

My afternoon “coffee” break (actually more of a restoration break!).  French fries, Belgian beer, American ketchup (those are Heinz packets).  Just call me a citizen of the world!
