It Would be Enough to Wash Dishes in Her Sink.... - Thursday, 23 March
Julia and Paul Child built it in 1966 on a potato patch owned by Simone Beck and her husband, Jean Fischbacher. They named it La Pitchoune (“The Little Thing”) - it's just 1500 sq. ft.
Julia and Simone developed and refined recipes for The Art of French Cooking in its kitchen,
Julia and Paul entertained the likes of M.F.K Fisher, James Beard and Richard Olney there.
It would be enough to wash the dishes in her sink, but soon I'll be chopping veggies on her worktable, rolling out pastries, making soups and maybe even a Daube de Boeuf Provençal, preparing platters of local cheeses & fruits & honeys & sausages, making a soufflé or two, drinking local wines, sampling the baguettes & croissants from nearby bakeries - undoubtedly using some of her own equipment (although I'm sure much of it has been replaced over the years). To say this is a dream come true would be understating things just a bit!
A year ago, as soon as I learned that Julia & Paul's home was available to rent on airbnb, I jumped right in and booked it for the last week of March 2017. I knew that I could find friends to share it with me, and I did! We leave this afternoon on various flights and will meet up in Nice, which is just about 30 minutes from the house.
So stay tuned for stories from La Pitchoune (not to mention stories from our other adventures in the south of France)! À bientôt!
