Last night while I was enjoying my “pizza quatre saisons” (ham, mushrooms, artichokes, olives, tomato, mozzarella, herbs) and Affligem (a serviceable alternative when my favorite Belgian ale Leffe isn’t on tap) at Bianco bistro across the street, I glanced up at the artwork on the wall. It looked like a framed poster of red poppies (simple black fame, about 1/2 inch thick, with a large black mat) but then it occurred to me that it was illuminated. And then yikes – it’s moving. And then hey – there are two of them in the room and they’re moving in unison! And then ohmygosh – the image has changed to fluttering blue ribbons and then to green flames (that then turned to yellow and then purple). Clearly, some device was transmitting the images to these flat-screen “posters.” There was no apparent relationship between the images (and their movements) and the music coming over the speakers (just a “beat tape”), although someone should develop such a product – any of you artists out there want to take on such a challenge?!?).
Maybe you have one of these devices at home, or you’ve seen them everywhere, but this is the first time I’ve seen it! Such a concept!
Just before I left the bistro at about 10:00, a giant lime green garbage truck drove down rue Marie Stuart. It had maybe one inch of clearance from the car parked at the corner. Hey, just because these are narrow ancient cobblestone streets doesn’t mean that the basic work of running a city can’t be done!
